I'm a parrot guy, myself, but these dogs were too awesome to resist! Their master was probably inside the café next door chatting up a hot babe. Thus the forlorn expression of longing on their guileless dog countenances.

After that, I use selective contrast enhancement, with layer masks (imagine an S-curve being applied to selective parts of the image, like the face, or the eyes). This helps to get that final pop.
